BEYOND MICRO-DWELLINGS: CAN WE IMAGINE COMPACT LIVING AND THE ABSENCE OF PERMANENCE?

Does a home have to be permanent or large? For the London Design Festival 2018, AKT II and OFIS arhitekti have brought Living Unit to London as a call for debate to drive design-led micro-living in London. Initiated by OFIS Architects and AKT II in 2016, the unit was born out of a larger initiative to research into homes in extreme environments, challenges of rising costs of land, and the unprecedented draw to live in cities like London. The goal includes implementing the most innovative ideas of form that adapt to transform underutilised sites into beacons of collaboration between construction and design, sustainability and resiliency. Though the idea of micro-living is not new, advanced in some parts of the world, it is a specific challenge faced by London, so a courtyard in Shoreditch presents a great canvas to explore this prototype. Multiplex have supported this initiative, aiming to capture the imagination and spark debate during London Design Festival on themes such as: minimum standards, prefabrication and speed of assembly/dismantling, interconnected construction and design, and the use of timber. As the capital's population increases along with the necessity to accommodate these growing numbers to live and work, can innovative temporary space-saving solutions offer a pragmatic approach for those who prioritise location over space?

Opening and Panel discussion:
The Unit will be displayed in the courtyard of 1 White Collar Factory, London from September 10th
Panel discussion: 17th September 5 th floor, AKT II, White Collar Factory, London, EC1Y 8AF 6:30-8:30pm
